Team Highlight: October

Writer's picture: Thrive Central OregonThrive Central Oregon

This month we talk to another of our newest additions to the Thrive Central Oregon team- Sophie! Sophie joins us as part of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest/Americorps program for a year of service. She tells us a little about what drew her to Thrive and Central Oregon, as well as some of her goals for the next year!

What inspired you to apply for/ take this volunteer opportunity?

I recognize I have a lot to learn from a nonprofit team and from the communities they serve. I was drawn to Thrive’s model that centers the wants and needs of the client, understanding that each person deserves the autonomy to make decisions for themselves.

Where did you move from/what is your background experience?

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and I recently earned a Bachelor of Science at Penn State University in a major called Community, Environment, & Development. My interests include art, agriculture, and creating meaningful connections with others. My last job was at a nonprofit that provides care and services to children who recently immigrated into the U.S. unaccompanied by an adult.

What are you most looking forward to?

I’m most excited to connect with clients and hopefully help to increase Thrive’s outreach to vulnerable communities throughout Central Oregon. I am also so happy to be working with such a supportive and close-knit team, so I’m definitely looking forward to learning more from my coworkers.

What are you most excited about being here in Central Oregon? What’s on your “must do list?”

I am really hoping to go stargazing at some point! And I’d love to do a roadtrip to the Oregon coast. I’m excited to explore the many hiking trails, ski slopes, lakes, and campgrounds that Central Oregon has to offer. The live music scene in Bend has been super fun too.

What’s your favorite quote/words to live by?

“We are all just walking each other home.” -- Ram Dass

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

The ability to communicate with anyone--human or animal--in their language.
